Black History Month

First published on: 6th October 2023

October marks the start of Black History Month (BHM) , a time to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contributions of black people to British economy, culture, and history. The focus of BHM is about writing back into history those events and activities that have been overlooked or deliberately ignored in mainstream narratives.

There are a number of ways you can participate:

Events

The Black History Month commemorative service on 15th October 2023 at Liverpool Cathedral will introduce the work of racial justice in Liverpool Diocese. This work supports us in uncovering some of our shared Christian history that has been silenced or lost. During the service we will be celebrating Black women of faith in recognition of their leadership, talent and impact.

We will also launch the Diocese and Cathedral Racial Justice Strategy ‘From Repentance to Repair’. This is part of our commitment to seek to transform the unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and pursue peace and reconciliation. The aim of our strategy is to change the culture of our churches and schools to become places committed to Anti-racist practices that support and promote the equality of all people.

Part One of our 2023 Micah Lecture: What it Means to 'do Justice' in Our Time. This will be presented by the Bishop of Liverpool - Right Reverend Doctor John Perumbalath.

Part Two of our 2023 Micah Lecture : What it Means to 'do Justice' In our Time. This will be presented by Revd Professor Kelly Brown Douglas.
