Have you wondered what goes in to planning and leading worship for groups of people? Why do we say the words we do? What helps others, be nurtured and challenged by the truth of God, recommit to following Jesus daily, and experience the presence of the Holy Spirit?

This 3 week course will give you insight into all of these questions and provide you with an opportunity to take first steps in leading worship.

Session 1 will explore what we mean by worship and why we do it. This will include specifically the expressions of Anglican worship, the shape of the church year and an understanding of liturgy. Together we will explore the use of music in worship.

Session 2 will delve deeper into an approach to planning a worship service, introducing you to a framework for crafting worship that draws others close to God and each other. Different styles and traditions of worship will be expressed through this framework. There will be an opportunity for you to have a go at some planning together.

Session 3 will explore the Eucharist and how all are included in it. We will explore the use of space and voice to create environments that allow others to engage with worship. You will have an opportunity to have a go at leading parts of a simple act of worship.

This course will be led by Rev Sonya Doragh, Rev Jeremy Fagan and Rev Kim Mannings who have between them a wide experience of all kinds of worship and will encourage you to find your authentic voice as you explore first steps of leading worship. Come along to understand more about yourself in worship with no pressure to have a go.

Are you exploring a possible call to preaching as part of your lifecall? Is someone encouraging you to have a go in your church but you’re not sure where to start?

This 3 week course will give you some background to the purpose and place of preaching in our church life. It will give you introductory insights into approaches to preaching and offer you support in creating your own short talk with the (optional) opportunity to try it out in a safe place for some useful feedback.

Session 1 will explore the purpose of sermons and approaches to using the biblical text appropriately. You will be introduced to a simple sermon structure so that you can begin to practically approach using some biblical text, and thinking about how your exploration of the text could inform the content of a sermon. You will be signposted to a range of accessible resources.

Session 2 will extend your thinking on approaches to preparing sermons with a range of models of preaching. You will spend some time working through processes of preparation for writing and delivering sermons.

Session 3 will take a whole-life view to preaching – the who? what? where? and why? Or preaching through all of who you are. You will hear short sermons and review what you have been learning through what you hear and observe. There will be chance, for those who want to, to try out a 3 minute talk you have prepared and be offered some supportive feedback.

This course will be led by Rev Bob Banton (Baptist Minister and Learning Manager in the Diocese of Liverpool), Rev Steve Pierce and Rev Mark Wade who will bring quite varied approaches to preaching in preparation and delivery, giving you opportunity to explore your own approach within a supportive framework.

This course is free to attend, just let us know you are coming by emailing Sam Stanford at lifecall@liverpool.anglican.org
