Bishops' response to verdict in the trial of Thomas Cashman

The Bishop of Warrington has spoken regarding today's verdict in the trial of Thomas Cashman:

We can only imagine how incredibly difficult the trial of Thomas Cashman has been for Olivia’s family and the wider community as they have forensically relived the horrific events that led to Olivia’s untimely death. We know there can be no peace without justice. The family has shown great dignity through the trial.  My prayer is that today’s verdict will bring at least a degree of peace so that the family are able to piece together the shards of their broken heart and start living their lives.

Liverpool has been shocked by this appalling story.  Through the lens of a camera, we have all looked into the eyes of a smiling and beautiful little girl with so much to live for.  What happened was wrong!  I would like to praise the courage of all who came forward and spoke out - it is their courage, together with the diligence of Merseyside Police which has brought this man to justice. We must stand against the gangs and unite as communities.

None of us should forget the story of a little girl whose life was stolen from us, whilst in her own home, by violent men.  But this story must not define the community and the great city of Liverpool. I know from listening to clergy working on the ground, right across the city that we are more than these headlines. Again, we have seen the way the community has come together to support one another and to look to a better future. Liverpool is a strong city, a loyal and resilient city, that always rises from difficult times and comes together. We recognise that like every city and community in the UK we have challenges with gangs and the problem of drugs. However, Liverpool is also a city about to welcome the world for Eurovision, with a vibrant cultural sector and communities coming together.

With Olivia in our hearts, my hope is that we will all commit to working for safer, brighter and better communities.

As the church celebrates the hope that the Easter story gives us, I pray that the words of the late, great Desmond Tutu will resonate in our hearts:

Goodness is stronger than evil.

Love is stronger than hate.

Light is stronger than darkness.

Life is stronger than death.

Victory is ours through Him who loves us.
