Play your part in reaching the Church of England net zero targets

First published on: 2nd February 2023

The Church of England has recognised the climate emergency by setting out a bold, compelling vision for achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2030. Our diocese is committed to achieving that vision and you can play your part.

We have two clear milestones for parishes to achieve in 2023. The first is to complete the Energy Footprint tool so you can measure your carbon footprint and take steps to reduce your output. The second is to become an eco-church, embedding this work in the life of your church.

Through this you can lay the groundwork for future steps to tackle this climate emergency.

You can find the easy to use ‘Energy Footprint Tool ’ (EFT) here. Whoever manages your energy bills is the best person to complete it.  The EFT is open until July 31st and will provide each church that fills it in with a footprint of the energy used in lighting and heating the church.

Phil Leigh, our Diocesan Environmental Officer and Programme Lead on our Net Zero Carbon 2030 (NZC2030) programme said “it is important for us to know what our ‘carbon footprint’ is as it enables us to know what the challenge is that lies ahead.  We can set targets and identify where our carbon hot spots are so we know where best to use resources to make reductions in emissions.  It can also be very helpful in finding where savings can be made for building inhabitants.  The Church of England provides a carbon footprint tool as part of the Parish Returns System which churches and other building types can use to achieve this.  I’d encourage all churches to fill this in.”

If you have any difficulty accessing or filling in the EFT please contact Phil.Leigh@Liverpool.Anglican.Org
