Liverpool Cathedral Lent Lectures 2021 series

First published on: 29th January 2021

Liberty to the Captives - this year’s Lent Lectures series, looks at how we as Christians can address the legacy of past engagement with the transatlantic slave trade and support the ongoing aspiration to end modern-day slavery in all its forms.

The online sessions hosted by Bishop Paul explore topics such as guilt by association with transatlantic slavery in collaboration with Liverpool Parish Church; to combating modern-day slavery amongst vulnerable Christians

Rev Neal Barnes, Canon for Mission and Faith Development at Liverpool Cathedral, who is coordinating the series said,

“Churches, like so many organisations in our city and region, have benefitted directly or indirectly from the transatlantic slave trade in past centuries and its on-going legacy of white privilege. Our series of lectures aims, firstly to look back so that we can build self-awareness. Then look at our present context where slavery still rears its ugly head; so often without us even being aware of it and how we are complicit in it.

“We want to hear from the voices of those whose lives are blighted and held back by modern-day forms of enslavement.

"Finally, we want to look ahead to ask, as Christians, how we can put our faith into practice so that slavery diminishes in our world and, truly, liberty is brought to those who are captive to its malicious tentacles.”
