Five steps to support giving: Step 2 Using the Parish Giving Scheme

First published on: 27th January 2022

The parish giving scheme has transformed giving in many parishes. In our next step, we explain how it can help you. We also bring some top tips to help your church gt the best from the scheme.

We live and are learning to give in a digital world. Mobile and internet banking are commonplace, cashless payments have shot up in all age groups since March 2020 and in every demographic. 9% of Facebook users are over 65: that’s 9% of 43million Facebook users! The Parish Giving Scheme is the best, most efficient way we can give to the work of God in our church.

Here are three reasons to go digital with the PGS.

  1. The Parish Giving Scheme helps us as disciples make regular, committed gifts
Gifts to support the life, ministry and mission of our church and as disciples to respond to God’s grace with generosity and gratitude.

Top Tip: Use the PGS tokens or locally produced giving cards to put in the offering plate. Generous giving is never a transaction, always transformational, always part of worship, discipleship, of mission.

  2. The Parish Giving scheme helps your church more than you know.
The PGS adds so much more: effortless, cost-free, monthly Gift Aid claims, better cash flow, and simplified administration for your friends who manage church money - just for starters.

And a lifeline in recent years. One treasurer commented, ‘without our PGS giving during Covid our church would have been in dire straits'

Top Tip: remember you have control and choice. You manage your PGS giving either online, by email or post - or just pick up the phone to the friendly PGS folk in Gloucester. PGS is a charity not a business or a bank.

  3. The Parish Giving Scheme is already bearing much fruit in our diocese: 85% of our parishes signed up (the most of any diocese), over 3,500 PGS givers gifting over £3.2million every year – and growing. Our PGS statistics stands up against far richer dioceses. And it’s all completely free to parishes and to givers. No fees, no costs.

Top Tip: go to the PGS website, click ‘Find Your Parish’ and bless your church and the folks who serve it by giving through the Parish Giving Scheme. If your church is not there you can register your interest. Or in office hours just ring: 0333 002 1271.

Generous discipleship means giving our best of what God has entrusted to each of us. As the Bible puts it in one place, we bring our first fruits in worship (Dt 26:1-11). The PGS is a way, a fabulous way, to give of the first and our best to the God who has given us everything in Jesus.
