Divestment & Carbon fasting - Think big this Lent

First published on: 24th February 2023

On Wednesday 1st February Faiths4Change launched their second series of 3 workshops with a focus on community, global engagement and lifestyle in-line with eco-church awards.  The first workshop entitled ‘divestment & carbon fasting’ was to encourage us to think big this Lent and make meaningful sacrifices that will have an impact locally and globally, whilst reaching some of the key areas of Eco Church and the Net Zero Carbon 2030 targets.

We were privileged to welcome Botani Tshidzu from Operation Noah who spoke to us about the urgent need to make a commitment as churches and a diocese to stop investing in fossil fuels if we are to limit global warming temperatures to 1.5º.  The reality is that the 4 main oil companies have in no way generated enough renewable energy to indicate a shift away from fossil fuels, despite recording this intention in their annual report.  You can find out more about divestment this lent by using this link

Once again Rev Hilary Bond a Christian Climate Action Activist blessed us with her gentle wisdom; this time she encouraged us to take up a carbon fast for lent, dividing the 40 days into weeks whereby giving up something with a big carbon footprint; week 4 for example – fast from cheese, coffee & chocolate!  Her tip for a successful fast was to encourage friends and family to do it together, so you can be accountable to each other whilst making a difference.
