We announce the next Archdeacon of Liverpool

Our next Archdeacon of Liverpool will be Revd Mike McGurk from the Diocese of Manchester

The Bishop of Liverpool has announced that, subject to the usual legal processes, the next Archdeacon of Liverpool will be the Revd Mike McGurk. Mike, succeeds Ricky Panter who retires in May. He comes to us from Manchester Diocese where he is currently Rector at Christ Church Harphurhey and Area Dean of North Manchester.

Bishop Paul was advised in the discernment process by a panel which included the chairs of our House of Laity and Clergy, a churchwarden from the archdeaconry, and an external advisor (Elizabeth Snowden, Archdeacon of Chelmsford). They interviewed a strong shortlist in a process which also included meetings with the Liverpool Area Deans and our three existing Archdeacons. The panel felt Mike's range of experience across the Church and in Northern urban ministry will equip him superbly for the role.

Mike will hopefully commence work in mid-August and will be formally collated as Archdeacon of Liverpool in September.

Bishop Paul said “I’m delighted with this choice. Mike will bring wisdom, warmth and a prayerful enthusiasm to Liverpool Archdeaconry and to the whole Diocese. His missional vision, down-to-earth approach and substantial practical experience will enrich us all as we work together by God’s grace to build the bigger church and make the bigger difference.  I know he will fit splendidly into our strong team of Archdeacons and I very much look forward to working with him as the future unfolds.”

Rev Mike commented "I'm looking forward to working and living in such vibrant, cosmopolitan, diverse and exciting city. Working alongside many others in the fulfilment of a very strong diocesan vison to a bigger church that makes a bigger difference. I commit myself to the service of the people of Liverpool and the Lord to see 'His Kingdom come and His will being done', in each one of our lives."

The Bishop of Manchester, Bishop David Walker, added "Mike is a very gifted priest, deeply committed to the mission of God in urban areas. He has proved himself able to get alongside and support others and to work for strategic change. He will be greatly missed, but I am delighted that our neighbours and fellow Lancastrians in Liverpool will have the benefit of his many skills.”
