Richard was the unanimous choice of the selection panel following a rigorous assessment of a very high quality field.
Richard has over 30 years of experience working in education. He has taught across the age range from being a reception teacher to teaching in secondary schools. He has been Deputy Head in both phases. An ordained priest Richard also spent time as a secondary school chaplain. He has also served as Chair of Lewisham Secondary Heads and overseen a £24m new build project at his school.
In his current post Richard has been instrumental in transforming a “secondary sink school” in Lewisham into a heavily oversubscribed and sought after school with 6 applications for every place. The last two SIAMS inspections were ‘outstanding’ showing “the strong spiritual leadership of the Headteacher permeates school life” and the “Headteacher provides inspirational leadership of the school and has guided staff through a period of rapid transformation and full restructuring”. We believe his leadership will be invaluable in our diocese.
Under his leadership since 2008 the secondary school was judged “good” by Ofsted in 2010. However the rapid transformation to form an all through school in 2013 together with a difficult cohort of students from another school led to a significant fall in performance and it being rated as “requiring improvements”. Changes since then resulted in a 20% increase in the number of pupils achieving 5 or more A* - C grade including English and Maths (55%) in 2015.
