Eucharistic service gives thanks for the ministry of Bishop Richard on his retir

First published on: 26th April 2018

In the heart-warming and uplifting Thanksgiving Service representatives from the Diocese led the prayers and the service was sung by the Great Choir of Liverpool Cathedral.

Tributes to Bishop Richard were led by The Chair of the House of Laity, Mrs Debra Walker and the Chair of the House of Clergy, Canon Bob Lewis followed by tributes from The Rt Revd Susan Goff, Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia and Assisting Bishop in the Diocese of Liverpool, the Rt Revd Tom Williams, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Liverpool and the Rt Revd James Jones, former Bishop of Liverpool.

The Bishop of Liverpool, Rt Revd Paul Bayes paid his own tribute to Bishop Richard before praying farewell and placing the Pastoral Staff of the Bishop of Warrington into the care of the Acting Dean, Canon Myles Davies.

Bishop Paul later commented: “Last Saturday was one of those magnificent but bitter-sweet occasions as we said farewell to Bishop Richard in the Cathedral. It was so good to see many from across our diocese and beyond gather to wish him and Helen God speed. We will miss them very much right across our Diocese. I, in particular, will miss his humour, warmth and companionship as a fellow bishop. Richard’s achievements in our diocese are many – not least his passion and drive for vocations, education and Reader Ministry; and it was good to acknowledge his work in this service. I know that you will join me in prayer for Richard and Helen as they settle into their retirement in Sheffield.”
