Emerging with a new understanding of the spiritual director role

Following the first spiritual directors’ retreat in October, Rev Dawn Harrison, who is Bishop’s Officer for Spiritual Direction reflects on how they “emerged with a new understanding of our spiritual director role.”

Led by Sr Magdalen Lawler SND and Fr Tom McGuinness SJ in the very beautiful setting of Parcevall Hall, North Yorkshire 15 people came together for meditation and reflection.
She told us:
“The retreat was described as ‘a time of grace and fellowship for the spiritual directors’, while the ‘gentle humour and deep wisdom’ of Sr Magdalen and Fr Tom ‘made them very approachable.’ Another attendee reported, ‘The sessions led by Tom and Magdalene provided excellent stimulus for personal conversation with God’
“I’m really pleased those who came along found the experience so positive. We will be building on this to look at what this first retreat has achieved. And as it’s the first retreat held specifically for spiritual directors, I’m using the feedback to look at ensuring the next retreat informs the design of the next one.”
The retreat was organised as a response to requests made by the spiritual directors and in 2018 Dawn and the team are working on continual professional development sessions.
If you aren’t sure what a spiritual director does, Dawn explains:
“A spiritual director is a companion, an enabler, encourager, a fellow pilgrim on the spiritual journey, but also someone trained to help you discern God’s movements in your life as they listen to you, but also for God’s prompting during your sessions together.”
