Fourteen new Street Pastors are to take to the streets of Liverpool this week – the first team to start their work in the city.

Four churches from West Derby, in partnership with the local council and police, have provided the volunteer pastors who in teams will walk around West Derby village centre on Friday nights offering care and support to those who may be in need.

Street Pastors is a multi-denominational project. Part of the requirement is that the group has volunteers a minimum of four denominations. The West Derby team includes volunteers from Methodist, Pentecostal, Anglican and Independent churches: St Mary’s, West Derby, West Derby Evangelical, Victory Family Church, and Crosby Green Methodist Church.

The West Derby Team is made up of people from a range of backgrounds and includes a teacher, a dinner lady, a sales assistant and priests. They will be recognizable by their blue jackets and caps featuring the Street Pastors logo.

Street Pastors was started seven years ago in London and has been so successful that it now runs approximately 200 centres around the UK with several thousand volunteers. Elsewhere in the country the arrival of this scheme has often led to a dramatic reduction in crime.

There is alsready a Street Pastors team up and running in Southport.

All volunteers will complete fifty hours of training to learn how they can best assist the people in their community. In other centres, the Pastors have handed out flip flops to girls in high heels as well as being on hand to help those in emotional or physical distress.

The Street Pastors will be officially commissioned at St Mary’s Church, West Derby Village on Friday 29th October at 6.30pm. The service will be attended by representatives from the police, council and local community.

Andy Radford, Chair of the local project and Pastor of West Derby Evangelical Church said, “We are looking forward to serving the people of West Derby, to show that the church cares and are out here to help.”

Rev Mark Coleman, Secretary of the local group and Rector of St Mary’s Church West Derby said, “Please come and support us. We hope to strengthen the partnership between Church, Council, Community and Police and help build a strengthen peace in our community.”
