Laying the foundations of faith in the Early Years

As we work towards how we can achieve the Bishop’s Growth Agenda, one area that we have been looking at is improving the faith provision for our youngest children.

Sue Mitchell, Children & Families Missioner said “It is important for churches to begin with the youngest children on their faith journey, by making sure their crèche or provision for under 4s is of a spiritual nature not just a child minding exercise. I have worked recently with St Cuthbert’s and the result has been very encouraging.”

Rev Alastair Prince, St Cuthbert’s Croxteth park said “Thanks to the support of Sue Mitchell, a team of active volunteers, and the PCC at St. Cuthbert's, we have recently overhauled our Creche facility for under 5's to infuse it with religious content.  This has required a change in ethos from the idea that the under 5's simply need to be entertained to be kept quiet, to the recognition that children have a spirituality, and that in fact the foundations of a Christian life can be laid at that stage.  All of the volunteers have received vital training, and the room has been refreshed and reinvigorated with new themed toys and objects to spark conversations that will deepen the faith of those who enter it (thanks to money from the Deanery Mission and Growth Fund).

The new look and format was launched on our Patronal festival this year transferred to the 6th September and the room was blessed and the work prayed for.  The outcome has been a renewed sense of purpose amongst the volunteers and has certainly been well received by the children who have responded well to the structure and approach.  It has been a really exciting phase in the growth of this Parish, and one that will ensure that those new to the Church quickly find their feet in the faith.

We would really like to encourage more churches to consider looking at this vital element in their ministry to their very young children."
