Bishop Richard toured Liverpool’s retail sector to find out about the pastoral support on offer to staff.

Bishop Richard met those chaplains who operate throughout the retail sector in Liverpool, and who provide a listening ear and support to those working in the various shops, bars and restaurants around the city.

The chaplains are part of Mission in the Economy, which works together with Faith Communities, the Public Sector, the Retail, Commercial and Business Sectors and Voluntary Organisations in the economic life of the Merseyside Region. This work is supported by Churches Together in the Merseyside Region.

Bishop Richard began with a tour of Liverpool ONE where he met the management team including Chris Bliss, Estate Director and Sara Carthy, Human Resource and Administration Director and Liverpool One Chaplain Jonathan Brown.

He then visited the Living Oasis Free Church Project in Lord Street and hear about their hopes for the building.

Bishop Richard then moved on to Clayton Square, the new police station at St John’s Precinct, St John’s Shopping centre, Local Solutions Shopmobility and St John’s Market where he met members of the management team and stall holders.

Revd Jean Flood, Mission in the Economy Co-ordinator said, “Mission in the Economy has chaplains of all denominations, able to provide retail sector staff with often essential support. Whether people need a listening ear or someone to be calm and quiet with, we are here. We are delighted that the retail sector has embraced what we have to offer; it shows just how strongly they feel about providing pastoral care for their staff.”

Bishop Richard said, “It goes without saying that times are hard, and the Mission in the Economy team is here to make it just that bit easier. It is inspiring to see the fantastic work going on around the city available for workers of all faiths or none. I would encourage anyone to speak to the chaplains based around the city, whenever they feel they need to.”

HR Director at Liverpool ONE, Sara Carthy, said; “At Liverpool ONE we feel that it’s important that all Team Members and employees in the stores and restaurants know they have someone to talk to should they need a good listener. Our Chaplin Jonathan Brown is a great asset to our team, offering support to retailers, customers and Liverpool ONE Team Members.”
