College of Canons elect Bishop Paul as Bishop of Liverpool

The Queen's appointment receives unanimous ascent in a ceremony that links us to the ancient traditions of the church.

The College of Canons of Liverpool Cathedral met on Monday before Choral Evensong to elect Bishop Paul Bayes as the next Bishop of Liverpool.

The election took place in a closed meeting in the Chapter House in accordance with the traditions and practices of the Church of England. The next stage will be the confirmation of election at York Minster on 23rd July with the Archbishop of York. Bishop Paul will also be paying homage to the Queen in the autumn ahead of his installation.

The formal election, which could only be attended by full members of the College was preceded by an act of worship. The election by the Canons was followed by a brief moment where our ecumenical fellows could also indicate their approval of the Bishop's appointment.

Proceedings were concluded by the proclamation of election (reproduced in the right hand column) before Choral Evensong.

The Dean of Liverpool, the Very Revd Dr Pete Wilcox said "it is tempting to be cynical about this election. But perhaps we can view it as the formal and legal equivalent of the moment when, during the service of installation, the congregation will be invited to welcome the new bishop with applause: it would be odd to abstain.  In other words, the ‘election’ is the point at which the Crown’s nomination
(which has emerged out of a long, thorough and definitely prayerful process) is placed before a body representing the diocese for its formal but joyful assent.  The word ‘election’ is, after all, derived from the Latin for ‘to call out’: we are privileged to add the call of our diocese to the call of God."

Bishop Paul Bayes will be installed at Liverpool Cathedral on November 15th. More details of this service will follow.
